The Specialist Resource Provision (SRP)
The Specialist Resource Provision (SRP)
Hedgehog Class is a Specialist Resource Provision (SRP) at Lake Farm Park Academy. Its primary goal is to support pupils with a diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) who currently have an Educational, Health and Care Plan (EHCP). Placements are funded by the Local Authority and for pupils in Year 1-Year 6.
The overarching purpose of the SRP's highly-adapted environment and curriculum is to increase a pupil's access to the mainstream environment and help them reach their full potential. To achieve this, pupils learn within the SRP's low-arousal, nurturing environment, where they can work towards individualised targets across four the key areas of: Communication and Interaction, Cognition and Learning, Social, Emotional and Mental Health, and Sensory and/or Physical Needs.
The provision has a capacity for 12 pupils across two specially-adapted classrooms. Pupils follow an adapted curriculum that is carefully planned to ensure coverage of mainstream content while meeting each pupil's individual developmental and academic needs. Pupils also have access to an additional outdoor play area and, where beneficial, have daily opportunities to transfer their developing social skills to the mainstream KS1 and KS2 playground.
Therapeutic Programmes
The SRP implements supportive therapeutic programmes, including Occupational Therapy and Speech and Language Therapy. The provision benefits from a dedicated Occupational Therapy (Sensory Circuit) Room and a fully-resourced Sensory Room. A key aim for the SRP is to encourage pupils to develop their self-regulation and become effective communicators. Staff are trained to be attuned to pupils' emerging strengths and needs and aim to promote de-escalation through positive behaviour support. A primary focus for our pupils is to understand, communicate, and regulate their emotions.
Pupils are supported by SEN-specific strategies such as Colourful Semantics, Sensory Stories, Attention Autism, Lego Therapy, Zones of Regulation, and Sensory Circuits. Staff work closely to develop, implement, and review therapeutic programmes with our Speech and Language and Occupational Therapists, who visit us on a weekly basis.
Pupils have opportunities to develop their social communication skills in small group settings and apply their learning in the wider school environment and local community.
Curriculum and Assessment
Pupils in the SRP have a linked mainstream class. Our goal is for pupils to spend at least 50% of their day with their linked class where appropriate. This is achieved through an individual timetable that ensures pupils attend the classes that will benefit them the most and in which they are best able to learn. The remaining time is spent learning with SRP staff and peers. In the SRP, pupils also have weekly Music, French, PE, and Tennis lessons taught by subject teachers.
Pupils are assessed termly against the Pre-Key Stage Standards using the assessment platform B-Squared Connecting Steps. Assessments inform a pupil’s next steps, alongside their EHCP End of Key Stage Outcomes and current emotional wellbeing needs. These next steps form a pupils' Individual Education Plan (IEP). IEPs are written and reviewed termly.
The SRP encourages a strong partnership with families through SEN coffee mornings and half-term assemblies.
