Phonics screening - Year 2

Dear Parents and Carers,

At the end of Year 1, we aim for at least a score of 32 or above* for your child to be successful in the Screening Check. This year, Year 1 pupils across the nation missed out on this screening test due to the national lockdowns. Therefore pupils will sit this assessment instead in the Autumn Term of Year 2. This assessment will take place Monday 14th -Wednesday 16th of December.

To ensure all pupils are in school on these dates and to fuel our pupils to have the best start to the day, we will be offering all pupils breakfast snacks and morning revision on these days. The Year 2 gates will open at 8:00am-8:10am for drop off, breakfast and revision. We have sent home hard copies of resources, alongside our online resources on Google classroom to support your children at home.

Phonics Screening Information

What Happens During the Test?

The test contains 40 words. Each child will sit one to one and read each word aloud to a teacher. The test will take approximately 10 minutes per child, although all children are different and will complete the check at their own pace. The list of words the children read is a combination of 20 real words and 20 pseudo words (nonsense words).

Pseudo Words (Nonsense words)

The pseudo words will be shown to your child with a picture of an alien. This provides the children with a context for the pseudo word which is independent from any existing vocabulary they may have. Pseudo words are included because they will be new to all pupils; they do not favour children with a good vocabulary knowledge or visual memory of words.

Yours sincerely,

Abigail Carlisle

Vice Principal & Phonics Lead

*32 pass threshold is based on previous Screening Checks but may be subject to change.
